Dog Days of Joy: A Beachside Reflection

Alyson Miller

This past weekend, I escaped to the coast for some much-needed soul restoration. Life had felt heavy, and the ocean always has a way of reminding me to breathe. But what truly made this trip special was experiencing it through the eyes of my dogs.

As we stepped onto the sand, I watched their tiny paws sink into its softness, their noses twitching as they took in the salty air. The wind made their ears flop wildly, and for a moment, all that existed was pure joy. They ran, they played, they chased the waves, completely immersed in the moment—something I often forget to do myself.

When we paused for a beachside picnic, they sat quietly, gazing out at the endless blue. It was a poignant sight—two little souls taking in the vastness of the world. I found myself wondering what they were thinking, what they saw in that horizon. Were they feeling the same peace I was? Were they as grateful for this moment as I was for them?

My dogs teach me daily. They remind me to slow down, to find happiness in the simple things to love unconditionally. They are there for me on the hard days, offering comfort without words, presence without expectation. And as I stood with them, ocean spray misting our faces, I realized once again how much they fill my cup.

Life can be unpredictable and overwhelming, but in their companionship, I find a steady, unwavering love. This trip was a reminder that fulfillment isn't always found in grand gestures or major life changes—it can be in a quiet moment, watching the world through the eyes of those who love you most.

Forever grateful for my four-legged teachers.
